martynka wawrzyniak completely covered in ketchup, takes off her blindfold

earlier this summer, photographer martynka wawrzyniak performance art piece and photo exhibition ‘ketchup’ was exhibited at envoy enterprises in new york. the one day exhibition saw wawrzyniak switch her role as photographer to be in front of the camera instead. ‘ketchup’ was a follow-up to her ‘kids’ show which was a series of portraits portraying the darkside of innocent children and capturing an element of the adult they will become.

kids are the typical subjects of wawrzyniak’s work, and ‘ketchup’ brought together another dimension of her work. wawrzyniak herself hates ketchup, but for this performance had the kids fill water guns with the popular tomato-flavoured condiment and allowed them to spray her with the sauce while she stood blindfolded against a gallery wall, giving up her power and giving the kids total control of the situation.
