new rolls-royce ghost exudes elegance in more minimal, pure design

born in 2009 from the desire for a more modest and minimalist expression of the british marque’s relentless pursuit of perfection in design, engineering and craftsmanship, the rolls-royce ghost has gone on to become the most successful car in their 116-year history. it revealed the new identities – and needs – of their younger clients who wished for subtle yet highly personal commissions, more than a chauffeur-driven experience, and heavy engagement with connect technologies onboard. over 10 years later, the new rolls-royce ghost edges closer to perfection on these three fronts. a design of minimalism and simplicity is underpinned by highly crafted substance and advanced technologies, delivering a precisely tailored car that exudes elegance as opposed to shouting.

using a proprietary aluminum spaceframe architecture, the longer and wider rolls-royce ghost – now a length of 5,546mm and a width of 1,978mm – creates a body as if made from one fluid canvas, uninterrupted by shut lines. it forms the foundation for the new design which follows the purity of the ‘post opulence’ philosophy, defined by the authenticity of materials. the assertive front is shaped by sharp bow lines that intersect an angular light signature. the pantheon radiator grille is subtly emboldened by 20 LEDs lined underneath its top. the ethereal front-end is finished with the spirit of ecstasy sitting within her own ‘lake’ on the bonnet.

a single straight line, resembling those seen in boat design, flows down the flanks to emphasize the car’s length as well as sense of motion. the glasshouse features equally proportioned window graphics to highlight it is a driver-orientated and chauffeur-driven car. the subtly arched roof line then tapers towards the clean rear, where the near-square rear lights cap off the design.

stepping through its coach doors, which can now open as well as close with power assistance, the interior pursues the same pure aesthetic as the exterior design. the finest materials construct the cabin, from leather seats and surfaces embellished with complex stichwork and panels of carefully treated wood with open-pore finishes. as a world’s first, the interior features an illuminated fascia that introduces an ethereal glowing ghost nameplate surrounded by more than 850 stars. located on the passenger side of the dashboard, the illuminated fascia twinkles just like the stars in the starlight headliner on the roof of the cabin.

underneath, the car is anything but minimal. the near-instant torque and near-silent running of its 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V12 delivers 563bhp and 850Nm of torque to the all-wheel steer, all-wheel drivetrain. the rolls-royce-renowned magic carpet ride has been refined and improved even further. called the planar suspension system, engineering developments and sophisticated scanning technology creates an even more stable ride that is as dynamic as ever. a new flagbearer system adjusts suspension proactively rather than reactively, and uses GPS data to pre-select the optimum gear for upcoming corners. this offers a new level of journey comfort and control for passengers and drivers alike.
