space kick sneakers offer a fresh take on the ugly 'dad shoe' trend

designed by michal kukucka in collaboration with rem d koolhaas of LA-based footwear brand, united nude, ‘space kick’ is the latest interpretation of the ugly sneaker streetwear trend that has prevailed over the past couple of years. using cutting edge prototyping techniques, 3D rendering, and traditional upper making, the team has created a collection of chunky sneakers in a variety of colorways and styles.

3D renderings were an instrumental part of the process

the outsole was 3D printed, and the test upper was crafted to visualize the shoe’s true proportions. the design eventually evolved into a more geometric, directional look. several rounds of uppers were crafted and put on SLS (selective laser sintering) – 3D printed outsole painted in black. this acted as a visual constant for testing the different design variables.

the designs strike a balance between seasonally relevant colors, staple brand accents and tones that the new target audience would appreciate (subtle shades x fresh accents linked to active/streetwear themes). after a positive reception from the men’s demographic, consumers sparked a demand for a women’s version. a taller design featuring an opened summer upper and velcro strap closure was introduced. to see the full space kick collection, you can visit united nude’s website here.
