the hand shake is recognised throughout the world as a sign of welcome. as such it serves as the ideal motif for the opening of a door
the shape of an open hand also happens to be ergonomically well suited to the task; providing a positive location for the thumb and fore-finger, as well as some volume for the palm to grasp.
the form is influenced by futurist sculpture - the hand abstracted until it resembles a sleek, dynamic hybrid of natural and mechanical. further, this embodies the idea that a handle must belong to the door as well as to the hand.
the handle is designed to be produced using existing manufacturing processes; namely casting and finishing with a polished chrome, nickel or similar coating. the handle has a conventional rose and thus could also make use of standard hardware.
