US-based startup zephyr aerospace has unveiled the design of a new airline seat and bed combination for economy class. called zephyr seat, this lie-flat accommodation is able to retrofit existing commercial aircrafts — both boeing and airbus — while complying with social distancing measurements for airlines.

most airline seats haven’t changed since the 1970s. 99% of all economy class seats are fixed upright and almost impossible to sleep in, forcing unnatural postures over long periods of time which can damage health. upgrading to first class is also not an option for the majority of travelers due to the high costs and passengers who are willing to pay for more for comfort, premium economy class seating only offers a little extra leg space, without the lie-flat feature.

the zephyr seat has been designed for economy class travelers on long distance flights. its patent-pending design introduces a social-distancing compliant seating module that aims to disrupt the entire airline industry, making flying comfortable for all travelers by offering the comfort and privacy of an individual cabin.
