frank lloyd wright's neils house in minneapolis on sale for $2.75M

sotheby’s international realty has listed frank lloyd wright’s neils house for $2.75 million U.S. dollars. located in minneapolis on cedar lake, the home was commissioned in 1949 by henry j neils and his wife freida. the structure boasts a post world war II usonian architectural design — a term assigned by wright referring to a group of around sixty middle-income family homes designed by the architect himself that are affordable and typically small, single-story dwellings.

the neils house by frank lloyd wright was completed in 1951 and since then, only two people have owned the architectural masterpiece. the home was designed in close collaboration between the architect and the owners who were well-versed in architecture. also, because neil worked in stone and architectural material distribution, the house features unusual features for a wright-designed home like the stone selected for the cladding as well as the aluminum window framing instead of the usual wooden ones. also, this is the only one of wright’s designs that uses marble walls.

in wright’s words, the house follows the goal of creating ‘affordable, beautiful housing for a democratic america.’ an L-shaped floorplan positions the living and sleeping areas separate from each other, placing the living room on the short side of the L while the sleeping portion is on the long side, ending in the carport. it also has the bedrooms and a gallery leading to the main entrance. the house, which is visible to the public, remains private thanks to the surrounding vegetation.
