orbita by chris jackson from new zealand
designer's own words:
using a socket set as inspiration, orbita translates the affordances embedded within this family of objects into the domestic landscape. the collection becomes familiar and speaks of reliability by utilising the visual language of tools, yet remains timeless and classic through material choices and finishes.
by replicating a number of measurements from a well-loved socket set, the ergonomics are pleasurable and well tested. the handles utilise the same production values and processes found in the current colombo 'design collection' and would be pressure die-cast with appropriate finishes. handles could also receive further material treatments, such as timber or rubberised detailing.
due to the generous nature of the bore area, there is the ability to include a key and lock mechanism within the handle without the need for a separate escutcheon. because of the designs symmetrical nature, one tool can be used for left and right handed versions.
working within key dimensions found in colombo products, orbita would dovetail into the existing range. a playful, timeless addition with a familiar and reliable personality.
