kientruc o conceives its ‘bó mon’ preschool to introduce a station of connectivity to a rural region of vietnam. the playfully designed children’s public school offers a centralized link which serves three villages in tú nang-yên châu. the design of the project serves to propose an open suggestion, and a prototype for future community projects by charitable and non-profit organizations. both functional and sustainable, the space introduces an exciting atmosphere which encourages creativity among its occupants.

kientruc o developed the design the preschool first by outlining the programmatic organization. by separating the classrooms, teacher accommodations and supporting rooms across a shared yard, the team generates a layout with a centralized courtyard that hosts all activities. the courtyard offers a multi-purpose open area beneath a shady awning where children gather and play together. when school is in session, the yard is a place where siblings from the school next door gather to wait for each other before going home, an outdoor classroom, and a communal space for local festivals to take place throughout the year.

the school is defined by the soft shape of its roof. this sculptural element creates a shaded area which slowly travels across the wall to the floor as the sun changes its course. the animated shadowing emphasizes the relationship between the architecture with its natural context of mountains and hills, where it blends itself between the clouds and mist of a highland afternoon. the team at kientruc o comments: ‘the forming of meaningful architecture has been increasingly difficult and challenging than ever with many uncertainties occurred during the long construction process, especially when it comes to a charity project with limited budget and constricted construction condition.’
