xfold: blend in & stand out by gerrit wigger from germany
designer's own words:
xfold plays with two extremes, drawing attention to itself and disappearing. on the one hand, the front exposes mainly thin lines, disappearing into the surrounding. on the other hand, a colorful inside is revealed when approaching the door. this door handle merges with the given architecture. yet, everyone will be attracted to it when being close. the design is straightforward given it’s linearity while incorporating some playful elements. the colors of the plastic piece inside are thought to be offered in a wide variety and the sheet shall be made from stainless steel. production wise, the counter part (the handle of the other side of the door) can be produced by simply folding the metal sheet the other way round. dispite all the edges, the design includes a rounded corner on the inside of the handle. this is a detail i love about the old door handles in my appartment: it feels nice to drag the door with the index finger only.
