JCPCDR's 'flying table' uses detachable seat belts to hang from the ceiling

for this design project paris-based studio JCPCDR architecture set out to create an everyday object that is both highly functional and versatile. the result of the team’s study comes in the form of the ‘flying table’, which, as its name suggests, can be suspended from the ceiling, assembled as a regular table, or tucked away when not in use.

the project was first conceived of by JCPCDR architecture as a study into the paradox between simplicity and technology. with this in mind, the whimsical table employs everyday technology, such as a seat belt mechanism, to afford an architectural object with a number of functions.

the mechanism that lifts the table is made possible with the use of several techniques, all of which are inspired by everyday objects: detachable, seat belt-like straps, electric curtain motors, integrated lighting, and folding legs. these details are all hidden in a rather rustic-looking tray with sleek, contemporary lines.

for use as a regular dining table, the legs can be pulled out and the straps detached. otherwise the surface can be simply suspended with the straps attached and used as a meeting table, a coffee table, or even a display table. with its numerous functions, the piece is designed to afford flexibility, allowing it to adapt to several uses or spaces while offering an object with a strong visual presence.
