located at the yard of aaksen responsible aarchitecture’s office amidst densely populated commercial and residential area in bandung, indonesia, the ‘backyaard collective’ includes a prefab laboratory that celebrates creative community activities in a modular environment. the space was initially an unoccupied warehouse of kayu lapis indonesia’s carpentry workshop that was established during the 1970s.

this aaksen responsible aarchitecture project proves that, despite often being characterized as rigid, bland or boring, modular design can be human-centered as well without compromising the advantages addressed in modularity. the use of measured modular components is a design method that contributes to sustainability issues, eliminating materials construction waste through an efficient process, and also opening new possibilities in defining the space for living. the backyard collective consists of two main modular spaces: the pixelated papandayan, an amphitheatre made of bricks for community events and the AAND sayana, a prefabricated cabin used as a laboratory hub and as an extension of office functions.

adopting the shape of papandayan mt. in indonesia and the aspects of interaction that occur when climbing the mountain, the pixelated papandayan shows a modular design experiment that uses local brick material. by setting seven bricks that line up horizontally as one module, the installation is formed by steps that can be utilized like amphitheatres. the module size is suitable for visitors to sit comfortably on the steps and interact with each other during daily office scrum, while some parts of the module serve as a planter pot in order to provide shade throughout the day. AAND sayana is a prefabricated modular micro house that can be fully assembled within 3 weeks. its primary use can vary according to the users’ needs and activities, while normally, the cabin is used as meeting room and podcast studio.

the building components were made in kendal, indonesia, and later gathered in the site for assembling process. the construction didn’t involve any heavy equipment, and therefore, it could occur anywhere from a narrow alley of the city centre, to the middle of a pine forest. in AAND sayana, the wall is made of CLT or cross laminated timber, an engineered wood panel in which the material acts as a structural or load-bearing wall. the structural timber was made of certified local burflower-tree or neolamarckia cadamba, local fast-growing trees commonly used for building materials. in terms of strength, the CLT panels were factory-made that has been calculated, tested, to be finally labelled as an earthquake-resistant structure.

the energy of the building is supported by on-grid solar panel system and all electronics are controlled with IoT (internet of things) by phone. this allows every future occupant to be conscious and aware of how much carbon footprint is left, how the building is made, what are the users’ actual needs, and what actions they have taken and should take for a better environment and humanity. AAND sayana is hoped to foster a faster development in remote areas, especially east indonesia, with a focus on high-quality standardized prefabricated local materials that can be effortlessly constructed by anyone, while keeping the environment at its natural beauty.
