the cloudform laboratory has renovated an old classroom at a junior high school in taipei, which had served as a chemistry lab for more than 40 years. the team was tasked with maintaining its core function as a lab while increasing its usability as a classroom. designed around the idea of facilitating more interactive ways of learning, the revamped space intends to provide a venue for fostering independent critical thinking and active, participatory learning.

how can a classroom be reinterpreted? who are the users? what other benefits can designers bring to the table for students and teachers on top of the core classroom features? after giving these questions some thought, cloudform laboratory decided to redecorate the classroom in vibrant colors and designate a space for student-led interactions and presentations.

equipment for experiments is stored in two types of color-coded cabinets, some of which can be moved around and used as countertops or desks for demonstrations and experiment preparation. the lab tables and chairs were also given touches of exuberant color. ‘what we envisioned for this classroom is a color-informed design that is not only practical in terms of dividing up the space but inspirational as well, giving students a unique classroom experience that will stay fresh in their memories.’ – cloudform laboratory.
