paul uhlmann architects designs modern barn house in australia

paul uhlmann architects have designed a getaway farmhouse called ‘the barn‘ in an australian suburb that features cathedral-like ceilings and expansive barn door-style openings. the design of the building, clad internally and externally in australian hardwood with a zincalume roof, creates a strong singular rural form that sits like a rural shed in a setting of both farmland and bush.

located in pullenvale, a suburb of brisbane, australia, the site is accessed via a meandering driveway decorated with sprawling jacarandas. paul uhlmann architects has designed the ground floor plan to engage with the sprawling lawn and grounds of the property via a sliding door that runs down one side.

it enables cross ventilation whilst allowing the barn’s residents to flow inside and out seamlessly. meanwhile, a floor to roof window encapsulated by exposed structural timber frames floods the space with light.

upstairs, the bedrooms are similarly characterized by wooden paneling, curved arched ceilings and large windows that illuminate the space. a large bunkroom with custom designed-bunk beds was designed with children in mind.
