hufton + crow photograph zaha hadid's one thousand museum in miami

in july 2019, zaha hadid architects completed one thousand museum in miami — its first and only residential skyscraper in the united states. located opposite to museum park, the 62-storey tower spans views across biscayne bay, the popular 30-acre park redeveloped in 2013 as one of downtown miami’s primary public spaces that includes the city’s new art and science museums. on this occasion, hufton + crow have visited the site to document the building in new images.

zaha hadid’s one thousand museum continues the studio’s research into high-rise construction that defines a fluid architectural expression consistent with the engineering for the entire height of a structure. featuring a characteristic concrete exoskeleton, the building showcases flowing lines that integrate lateral bracing with structural support. its columns fan out from the base as the tower rises to meet at the corners, creating a rigid tube highly resistant to miami’s wind loads.

‘the design expresses a fluidity that is both structural and architectural,’ explains zaha hadid architects’ project director chris lepine. ‘the structure gets thicker and thinner as required, bringing a continuity between the architecture and engineering.’

other architectural features include a glass fibre reinforced concrete form-work that provides an architectural finish that requires little maintenance. behind the exoskeleton, a crystal-like façade contrasts with the solidity of the structure. inside, the tower’s floor plates are almost column-free, with the exoskeleton’s curvature creating slightly different plans on each floor. for example, on the lower floors, the terraces cantilever from the corners while on the upper ones, the terraces are found behind the structure. on the top floors, an aquatic center, lounge and event space can be found.
