Without using a image of animal, this fast moving countdown represent the number of species on earth. To remind people the number of species is decreasing, they are not exist anymore, and we should do something to stop. The grey color is to make a mood of sadness and serious.
the countdown counter can also use in other design, to specific countdown to one species.
