961 circles by Charlotte Houman from denmark
designer's own words:
Textile designer Charlotte Houman:
The work “961 circles” is made in non-woven polyester (techno-textile) that have been cut out with a digital plotter. The fabric is intended as a room divider, a wall decoration or a rollerblind.
In my work as a textile designer and a craftsperson, I always consider the sustainability of the materials and the work process. Furthermore, to me, sustainability is also about ensuring durable products that people can stand looking at for years.
I found the material for the submitted works in the German firm Junkers & Müllers. The firm has an Eco-Tex Standard 100 certificate on all its wares.
In the past few years, I have worked with a variety of cut-out techniques, mainly manual approaches but recently also with a plotter. Initially, it was the “pure” work process that appealed to me, since it meant that I did not have to worry about waste water from printing frames (I am originally a textile printer) or smells and fumes from dyes and chemicals in my workshop. This work method has later become my speciality, both as an industrial designer and as a craftsperson.
The use of a plotter has developed my work with textiles. I am now able to do very large-scale works, while a manual approach would make the large scales unmanageable. It is also artistically rewarding to be able to choose that a work should consist of perfectly cut-out circles as in the submitted work.
