at art basel miami beach, fernando mastrangelo designs the audemars piguet lounge

swiss luxury watch manufacturer audemars piguet presents its lounge at art basel miami beach, designed by fernando mastrangelo, during miami art week 2019. the continuation of a two-year design collaboration with the brooklyn-based artist and designer, the immersive, sculptural project evokes the swiss jura mountains -– the company’s home since its founding in 1875.

first unveiled during art basel in hong kong in march 2019, the design has evolved for this year’s edition of art basel with bespoke furniture, design cases, and walls inspired by the natural landforms of the vallée de joux, crafted after his visit to this mountainous region.

audemars piguet invites visitors to experience the vallée de joux — the site of the swiss headquarters — through the art basel miami beach lounge by brooklyn-based fernando mastrangelo. the seamless gradients of tones and textures are generated from boulders sourced from the vallée. these extracted materials are crushed, cast, and repurposed into walls, display cases, and furniture. the entire booth was created within the walls of fernando mastrangelo’s brooklyn studio before launching in hong kong in march 2019.
