designer's own words:

During the II World War, Cypridina Hilgendorfi, an organic sedimentation of the Japan deep sea, that was obtained in big quantities leaving submerged ceramic vessels with bait, got a curious use, when using it in campaign to read messages without having to always appeal to the dangerous sheaf of light of a lamp. For it, simply expanded it a pinch of the powder on the hand and then, after humidifying it:
