birdhouse by paul clark from uk
designer's own words:
Birdhouse is the result of a second year university project where the brief dictated that I design a product made from discarded or unwanted materials. I used the common plant pot because it is a mass produced item that is contributing significantly to the amount of waste going into landfill sites. The design is interesting in the sense that it doesn't always appear the same, the finished product can look entirely different depending on the size and shape of the plant pot and the other recycled materials used to make the face and perch. The design utilises, some of the existing features from the pots such as, the lip on the upper half as a rest for the face plate and the draining points in the base for screw/cable tie holes to secure the birdhouse to walls, roofs or branches etc. This helps to keep the design simple. As a mass produced item, I would hope this product would help to protect the environment by reducing the amount of waste going into landfill sites whilst also providing a safe haven for birds.
