the foreign tree by dennis han from singapore
designer's own words:
The foreign tree, a symbolic structure for environmental awareness is designed and to be strategically placed in specific locations to evoke thoughts on concerns of environmental protection and conserving natural resources. A question inscribed on a piece of bronze plate is intentionally mounted on the artificial trunk of the tree to question and allow the reader to ponder on it. The trees which will be preferably found in cities, towns, parks or even conservation areas are erected there to give itself highlight. The odd shape that the man-made tree has within the environment will draw upon attention and interest to the community which is the core objective of its existence. Ironically, the foreign tree which emphasizes on environment protection is also made up of materials that are environmentally friendly like that of its trunk which is constructed of galvanized steel which itself is recyclable and emits low energy during its production. And the top shades which are from powder coated steel emits near zero volatile organic compounds during production process. These two material elements which are the core components of the structure of the tree are really examples of this awareness program which act on what it speaks about where the public will eventually gain insights and to be challenged on.
