TONERICO:INC designs an automotive emporium for both man and machine in tokyo

situated in a residential district of koto city, tokyo, TONERICO:INC has created ‘A PIT AUTOBACS SHINONOME’ as a place that caters for both cars and people. just a 15-minute drive from downtown, the program of the two floor automotive emporium comprises of a garage, bookshop, starbucks and toy store.

the concept behind TONERICO:INC’s design is to provide ‘a pitstop for both cars and people’. on the first floor, the ‘premium pit’ automotive service center is decked out with 29 cameras that livestream to a cellphone app so that customers can keep an eye on their car as they relax upstairs. this space is characterized by sleek, metallic interior finishes, which are highlighted under the long strip lighting. 

the second floor is made up of areas with themes based on eight different lifestyles, including ‘travel & car,’ ‘garage & car’ and ‘family & car’. each themed area is partitioned off from the others, either inside or outside of a connecting gallery that encloses the entire floor. this upper level contrasts with the lower floor as the red colored walls and timber finishes bring an element of warmth, while the black metal display and drop-down lighting reflects the garage below.

in essence, A PIT AUTOBACS SHINONOME is designed to integrate department store shopping with automotive services. the project is shortlisted for the golden pin design award 2019‘s best design category, which will be revealed at the award ceremony in taipei on december 5, 2019.
