tsuyoshi tane's 'archaeology of the future' exhibition travels from tokyo to são paulo

tsuyoshi tane’s ‘archaeology of the future’ exhibition, previously on view in tokyo, has traveled to brazil where it is presented at japan house são paulo — the cultural center designed by kengo kuma. installed on the building’s second floor, the show portrays tane’s creative universe through 15 projects created between 2006 and 2019. this collection of work, curated by the architect himself, is represented by 600 objects that form part of his process, including five large scale models, and 2,000 images on the gallery’s walls.

the name of the exhibition at japan house são paulo, ‘archaeology of the future’, references tsuyoshi tane’s architectural manifesto. ‘when I first became an architect, instead of attempting to make something new, we tried to excavate the memory of what had been,’ the japanese architect told designboom in tokyo last year. ‘there are places that have memories that are almost forgotten or have even disappeared. but I avoided this idea of trying to transform a place to push for the future — instead, aiming toward stronger, longer, more durable architecture.’

one of the projects featured in the show is the estonian national museum, which was completed in 2016 when tsuyoshi tane was working at DGT architects alongside dan dorell and lina ghotmeh. born out of deep historical research, the work is an extension of the remains of a soviet airstrip and exemplifies the relationship between the place’s past and future. in 2017, the architect founded atelier tsuyoshi tane architects in paris, where he lives and works today. ‘archaeology of the future’ remains on view in são paulo until october 13, 2019. see designboom’s previous coverage of the exhibit, and read our in depth interview with the architect, here.
