SAI and satoshi saito construct a 'wall pillar' house in kyoto, japan

SAI architects, led by satoshi saito, has completed a residence in the japanese city of kyoto titled ‘pillar house’. the design is the result of local building regulations, which enforced strict rules on the structure’s roof shape, coloration, and occupation of its site. as only 30 percent of the plot could be built upon, the architect designed a contemporary interpretation of a traditional gable roof with overhangs that help increase the home’s usable areas.

to create a roof canopy without purlins, SAI architects strengthened the structure using bespoke metal supports. the ‘wall pillars’ that support the roof canopy also help ensure privacy for each area of the interior. an entrance to the south leads directly into the home’s double-height living space, which is arranged in a linear configuration. the kitchen and dining area is found at the center of the plan, with a bathroom and washroom found at the far end of the property.

stairs lead to the dwelling’s upper level, which contains two bedrooms and an area for study beneath the substantial roof. a garden runs alongside the house, with plants used to establish a relationship with nature. ‘with the outer appearance preserving the traditional style in kyoto, a community with diversified modern lifestyle can be achieved while maintaining the culture that had been valued and treasured throughout the era,’ says satoshi saito.
