pampers launches 'lumi' smart diapers that track baby pee

google’s sister company verily has partnered with US consumer goods giant procter & gamble (P&G) to sell ‘smart diapers‘ that monitor baby’s sleeping patterns and track their pee. the new product, called lumi, will be sold by pampers and comprises an all-in-one connected system that includes two activity sensors for diapers, a logitech camera that works as a wi-fi monitor and an app to record all the data.

each activity sensor attaches easily to a velcro-like patch on the bottom of each lumi smart diaper and has a battery life of about three months. lumi will be sold by the P&G-owned brand pampers and builds on the company’s swaddler line, using each sensor to detect how soaked the blue wetness strip is outside of the diaper.

the sensor then sends all information the the accompanying app where parents can chart feeding times and milestones to better understand how their child’s routines are changing over time. meanwhile, the logitech camera – which features a high-definition, wide-angle monitor – includes night vision and two-way audio so that parents can keep an eye on their little one. it also tracks room temperature and humidity.

lumi smart diapers will be available in the US from this autumn and could be launched in the UK soon afterwards. pampers recommends that the sensors be used for newborn to 12-month-old babies. there is no word on price just yet but pampers says it will lineup with current models.
