WGNB combines a black circle, quadrangle + triangle for the flagship store of juun.j in seoul

WGNB has designed the flagship store of fashion brand juun.j in seoul, south korea, combining a circle, a quadrangle and a triangle in its architecture. focusing on the use of black, the identity color of juun.j, the korean studio has built a two-story structure where various intensities of darkness coexist with dramatic natural light that penetrates the interior through strategically placed windows and a large opening on the store’s circle-shaped garden, which creates a striking contrast with the rest of the space.all images courtesy of WGNB and juun.j

WGNB has divided the store in two floors, incorporating women’s wear, a café and the garden on the ground floor, and the menswear on the upper floor. using light and shadow as a way to intensify black, juun.j’s brand color, and turn it into space, the studio has composed all sections apart from women’s wear, which features contrasting white hues, using varied densities of darkness. ‘black is a color symbolic of juun.j and the most beautiful shadow out of the shapeless existences,’ notes the seoul-based studio. ‘in an attempt to turn black into space, we organized spaces by either hanging plenty of objects or by separating them and generating shadows.’

comprising a combination of basic geometric shapes, the juun.j flagship store expands within a single-story circle space that encloses its garden, where a tree is growing within a ‘floating’ planter, and a double-story quadrangle and triangle, which enclose the clothing sections. eaves spreading forward work as an awning and make visitors feel natural light coming as a result of reflection on the garden, which can be seen from within the space along with the tree floating inside it.
