de tomaso reveals retro-futuristic P72 supercar at goodwood festival

de tomaso is celebrating it’s 60th year with a new limited-edition P72 sports car, a tribute to the italian sports car maker’s 1960s P70 prototype racer. inspired by the decade’s early years, it carries a number of vintage elements including a curvaceous design and manual transmission.

the P72’s flowing surfaces, bold lines and emphasized wheel arches, case a carbon fiber chassis derived from the apollo intensa emozione. it consists of the monocoque, as well as subframes and crash structures that adhere to respective FIA LMP safety requirements and features a carbon mono-cell.

inside, an interior focused on analogue and tactility takes a minimalist approach with as little tech intervention as possible. still, the result is quite opulent, featuring quilted leather and gauges that look like faberge eggs. classically designed switchgear and circular analogue dials take inspiration from 60s and 70s designs.

‘a similar way the pantera created a new category when it debuted in 1970, the P72 will create a new benchmark of its own. we have created a modern-day time machine that pays homage to an integral part of history and a car with its own provenance,’ says ryan berris, de tomaso general manager and CMO.

‘when the final specifications and pricing for the car is revealed, people will realize how it adheres to the six core foundational pillars of de tomaso: heritage, passion, racing, european design, and world-class performance at extreme value.’

other technical specs are currently shrouded in mystery but what we do know is that the P72 will be extremely exclusive. de tomaso producing only 72 cars and it estimates a starting price of €750,000 (approx. $850,000 USD). interest can now be registered on the de tomaso website.
