MAYU architects designed the ‘blossom pavilion’ for the 2018 taichung world flora exposition. the pavilion is intended for floral exhibitions, hosting competitions and spaces for education. located outside the houli horse ranch in taichung, taiwan, the pavilion sits upon a vast, uninterrupted grassland surrounded by a beautiful landscape.

the architects created the building as a datum point within the landscape. the building’s form derives from the panoramic perception of its surroundings, resulting in a circular plan. the pavilion is made of two overlapping circles, each housing a major program: the bigger circle hosts flexible exhibition spaces while the smaller overlapping circle includes a sustainable greenhouse for orchids. the varying lighting conditions, contrasting materials, and interior heights and openings, give these two spaces distinct characters and a dynamic spatial relationship.

two additional circular structures, a wooden ramp and a glass staircase hanging outside the building, provide continuous circulation throughout. this exterior path enables a smoother flow through the various spaces and also offers multiple viewpoints out to the landscape. the building’s skin is composed of golden vertical slats that angle out towards the top, creating a sculpted curvature resembling a flower. although the flower motif is subtle, the pavilion represents an important landmark for the famed flower exposition.
