primary school by ANIMA imitates surrounding iraqi marshes

a new primary school in iraq, designed by ANIMA, seeks to create a new center that encourages creativity and the sharing of ideas. the proposal attempts to establish a playground to foster learning and new experiences rather than a place confined to a rigid educational system.

one of the designer’s main goals was to propose an architecture that promotes community regeneration. the new primary school acts as a catalyst that weaves the marsh community into the facility; a structure that will sustain the area’s education.

the design incorporates sustainable design strategies to maximize renewable resources and mitigate their impact on the environment. skylights line up the side of the roof for optimal natural light while preventing direct rays from the harsh iraqi sun. the low angled roof promotes better rainwater collection and an ideal place for solar panels. the resulting concave interiors provide effective acoustics inside the classroom buildings.

the alternating layout of the buildings optimizes wind speed to naturally ventilate the interiors. the water that surrounds the structures also takes advantage of this feature for passive cooling.

ANIMA intends the school to be built completely in situ using local building materials and techniques. this will minimize the construction period and reduce the materials that need to be delivered to the project’s remote location. the overall modularity of the building’s form means easier repair and possibility for future expansion.
