john pawson combines three barn-like volumes into alpine house in kitzbühel, austria

john pawson has completed a contemporary family house in the alpine town of kitzbühel, in tyrol, western austria. comprising a cluster of smaller buildings, the residence is split into three barn-like structures set on a plinth and shifted relative to one another, which allows the required mass to sit modestly within the mountainous location.

combining contemporary aesthetics with recognizable historical precedents, pawson has designed a refined, modern silhouette, which, at the same time, maintains clear connections with the surrounding vernacular structures. the kitzbühel house incorporates three peaked roof profiles that echo the three mountains forming its backdrop, while it has been completed with an infinity pool on one side of its lush green courtyard. all three volumes combine a selection of elegant finishes in wood, stone, and concrete, offering a fresh take on traditional alpine architecture.
