'beaver' glassware by nendo for LASVIT looks as if it's been gnawed into

nendo presents their new glassware collection entitled ‘beaver’, for czech crystal glass manufacturer LASVIT. as the name suggests, the design is inspired by the animal and the way in which they gnaw tree trunks to build their dams. this latest project consists of six-pieces, including wine glasses, tumblers, whisky glasses, carafe, flute glasses and shot glasses.

to form the ‘beaver’ collection, traditional czech crystal has been decorated by making numerous cuts into the surface. the result makes the glassware reminiscent of tree trunks which have been chomped into by beavers and their large, sharp teeth. this natural animal process is reflected in the silhouette of the glasses and the overall design creates an interesting contrast between the element of crystal glass and the idea of timber which the glasses conjures.

the new collection designed by nendo for LASVIT is an interesting departure from traditional delicate stems which usually form wine glasses. the aim behind the ‘beaver’ is to give the idea of a tree which is about to fall down, and the tension which that moment balances on. the insertions into the glass also result in interesting displays of light in the crystal and glimmering reflections. the deep abrasion and intricate polishing of the glassware is extremely difficult to achieve and has only been made possible by the hands of a highly skilled glass artisan.
