curved wood lattice roof hangs above nasca's blue sky nursery school in japan

the blue sky nursery school by japanese studio nasca is attached to the regional medical support hospital in kan’onji city, kagawa prefecture. built on an unusual site which looks towards the hospital entrance, an independent garden, and a parking space on the main roadside, the project takes the form of a simple volume wrapped in a wood panel façade.

nasca has created three nursery areas for children from 0 to two years old, which are loosely partitioned with pieces of furniture. the main area is a wide one-room space, while the service area is concealed by a blue folding screen-like wall on the side. a curved laminated wood lattice roof in a shell shape creates a concentrically expanding space. natural materials such as wood or stones from a nearby river are incorporated throughout the interior and exterior to create a tactile experience for children.
