loto shakers by yuichiro nakano from australia
designer's own words:
The creation of a set of delicately manufactured salt and pepper shakers is an expression of design that is both aesthetically unique and functional. The lotus root is both ornamental and a food plant and serves as a clever motif for the design as well as an effective synthesis of the natural environment with the constructed environment. The product moves away from kitsch forms of salt and pepper shakers in order to recreate a raw form of storage for essentially raw ingredients.
One of the design features is the holes at the top of each shaker – whilst representing the seeds of the plant, they have also been carefully constructed using the principle of Fibonacci Theory. In that way, the shape is takes on different forms depending on which angle one views it. Its organic shape allows the design to be created from different earthenware and porcelain materials as well as manufactured via the use of injection moulding for plastics.
