edoardo tresoldi creates changing faces from wire mesh on barcelona rooftop

to celebrate the 25th anniversary of l’illa diagonal, the italian artist edoardo tresoldi has created the site-specific public art work ‘limes’. the building, l’illa diagonal, overlooks one of the city’s major streets and was designed by pritzker prize-winning architects rafael moneo and manuel de solà-morales. tresoldi’s artwork will be exhibited on the roof from december 4th 2018 until january 26th 2019, and will then be partially re-installed in the large interior spaces.

the installation by tresoldi is composed of six transparent 5.5 meter high volumes, differently arranged along the edge of the roof, each of them evolving into a face. the artwork uses the perspective of the urban scale and interacts with the architectural form of l’illa. by using wire mesh, the shapes of the faces appear to change as you move around the building, creating a unique interactive quality. 

the figurative sculpture represents the idea of public space being a theater for human interactions, and reflects the fleeting encounters and moments experienced by people on the street. the installation outlines a human architecture that oscillates between subject and context as the faces appear and recede. arranged in sequence, the sculptures follow one another and reveal their contents either gradually or all at once. depending on the perspective of the observer, the faces in ‘limes’ evolve while capturing the light and blending in with the sky.
