SPARK architects' 3D-printed big arse toilet converts human waste into electricity

singapore-based SPARK architects has recently developed a concept dubbed the big arse toilet which converts human waste into electricity. designed for use in india, the 13-square-meter project aims to combat open defecation and the associated issues of hygiene and sanitation in remote villages. the transportable 3D-printed toilet module has been created in support of world toilet day and comes with a slogan that states ‘spark gives a sh*t’.

made from bamboo fibres mixed with bio-polymer resin, SPARK architects’ bold concept converts human waste into biogas and via a micro CHP unit (combined heat and power) transforms the biogas into electricity. the printed shell of the toilet features a toilet bowl and basin printed as part of the toilet cubicle with an underground store for the biogas. the exterior of the shell can be rendered or finished with local materials for a better adaptation to the environment.

the architects state that the toilet and biogas dome can be flown by drone into remote locations and can be easily assembled on site. consequently, it is intended to last for up to a decade, generating enough electricity to power a small community of eight dwellings.
