serge schoemaker builds a sculptural home studio of weathering steel in hoofddorp

with the rise in land prices and numbers of people working from home, high-quality insulated garden studios have become a big trend. in hoofddorp, the netherlands, serge schoemaker architects uses limited architectural means to design a sleek multifunctional home office. the result is a sturdy yet elegant structure built on a narrow plot beside the freestanding house of the clients.

with its monolithic form and minimalist details, serge schoemaker’s sculptural house stands out amidst the traditional buildings in the neighborhood. due to space limits and the care with which the structure had to be constructed, the architects decided to prefabricate the house in the workshop and install it on the site with a crane. the façade steel plate and the timber-frame structure provided the necessary stability during transport.

clad in weathering steel, the reddish-brown volume blends naturally into its green surroundings. various cladding panels were laser-cut to size and then assembled like a tangram. the minimalist interior is entirely made of birch plywood, contrasting beautifully with the rust-colored exterior.
