BMW vision iNEXT car recreates the familiarity of my favorite space

what is your favorite space? imagine it for a second; think about the feeling it creates, the memories it evokes, and what physical or psychological elements make it that way. with the principles of automotive design in a revolutionary moment (with the development of autonomous driving and 3D-printing for example), BMW is designing the future of mobility through not just new technologies but, most importantly, through the overall experience.

introducing the BMW vision iNEXT, which is set for production in 2021. the sports activity vehicle conceptualizes how the beauty of technology does need to appear ever-present to boldly enrich our lives. inside the emotionally designed exterior body, which has been painted in a copper finish that seems to age with use, the expansive interior features three key ‘shy tech’ amongst a backdrop of richly crafted materials. the space intends to create a magical, warm, homely environment where passengers feel comfortable and look forward to spending time in on a daily basis.

BMW’s designers built upon their favorite spaces in the creation of the BMW vision iNEXT. ahead of the world debut of this electric SAV, jose casas pena, exterior designer BMW i, explores his most beloved setting and how this is not limited to a pre-defined perimeter. instead, intriguingly, it is how this feeling of familiarity – when riding a horse – transports him to his home, childhood and family. and that is just one of the feelings the car aims to evoke.

with a pairing of dynamically sculpted surfaces and large glass panels, the exterior design establishes a powerful form. inside, the windows, which all align with the upper portion of the compartments, create a sense comfort and security whilst still seemingly being open and connecting passengers to the surroundings. much like the feeling of riding a horse, the car accommodates for both rousing and relaxing performances. the intimacy of the interior ensures the vision iNEXT feels like home wherever you go.
