‘little roofs’ is a project by estudio felipe escudero in pifo, ecuador, with the concept of combining tradition and modernity to create an industrial building that represents the ethos of the client. the design is characterized by a series of differently sized gable roofs, covered in an undulating skin of black and white aluminium cladding.

the building’s largest warehouse is designed as a temperature controlled storage area for cheese. polyurethane panels have been specified on the inner skin which thermally insulate the internal space from the outside. at the entrance to the site is the ‘guard house’ which resembles a smaller version of the main structure. the same geometry, but at a lesser scale, is employed by estudio felipe escudero to create a connection between the different elements of the design.

the exposed structural details in the interior aim to bring a beautiful contemporary touch to the building. the vaulted ceilings in the office and meeting areas create a triple height space that allowed the internal lights to be conceived as a sculpture by the lighting designer as they used this space to vary the position of the fixtures. the scheme also incorporates a courtyard with a central tree to provide workers with a place for rest and contemplation. the resulting design by estudio felipe escudero provides functional spaces that appear in totality as a series of peaks relating to the surrounding andean mountains and valleys.
