electric BMW vision iNEXT's shy tech turns interior into one touchscreen

envisioning a new era of mobility, BMW vision iNEXT is a highly automated, electric and fully connected SAV (sports activity vehicle). with a production model based on the concept planned for 2021, the design is positioned as the brand’s new technology flagship and, as such, showcases some of the technology they may use in the future. this includes three ‘shy tech’ applications: an intelligent personal assistant, intelligent materials and, finally, an intelligent beam.

from first glance, the vision iNEXT looks unmistakably from the BMW i family. the exterior features the large interlinked double-kidney grille, side window graphic and blue accents upon its surfaces. furthermore, its clearly sculpted forms and surfaces define a sophisticated appearance that is furthered with its liquid greyrose copper paintwork, which gradually changes in shade. 3D printed patterns, cameras that replace the exterior mirrors, and slender head and rear lights complete the design.

two large opposing doors, which removes the B-pillar, open via touch-sensitive illuminated door openers. users are welcomed into a ‘living space’ on wheels that acts as a place for relaxation, interaction, entertainment or concentration. below the large panoramic roof, the spacious cabin features two individual seats in the front plus a one-piece bench in the rear. nude-shaded materials define the driver’s area where there are two visible display panels and steering wheel that adjust according to two modes. ‘boost’ positions this equipment towards the driver whilst ‘ease’ slightly retracts them to offer a more open space.

across the wooden center console, which is supported by illuminated crystal glass and a bronze-colored base, the interior’s ‘shy tech’ somewhat appears. there are no other screens in the car; the only other technology integrated is visible and operable when required. intelligent personal assistant responds to verbal prompts, such as ‘hey BMW’, and links to smart devices and home networks. intelligent beam technology projects images, moving content or interactive video graphics on command. and intelligent materials enable users to control applications using simple-touch functionality on surfaces. as well as on the center console, this allows passengers to adjust music controls by tracing gestures upon the rear bench’s jacquad cloth.
