open architecture systems unveils plans for solar-powered barilla pavilion in parma

london-based studio open architecture systems has unveiled its proposal for a new addition to pasta company barilla‘s headquarters in parma, italy. the project envisions a series of solar-powered pavilions linked together by a path rather than a singular building, and, according to the architects, draws from the company’s key values: tradition, family and community.

open architecture systems‘ proposal aims at creating a destination where different events take place, offering an adaptable, multifunctional environment that optimizes the use of natural resources. sheltered by a roof made of a grid of photovoltaic cells and perforated panels for natural ventilation, the new solar-powered pavilion acts as a container for new activities, community gathering and exploration.

starting from the idea of bringing something unique to the existing site, the architects’ design approach creates a new topography that defines low as well as high points. the new barilla pavilion is shaped by a canopy, under which the program, which includes a research start-up, auditorium, store, exhibition, and restaurant, is distributed.
