new images taken by hufton+crow mark the first year of train services at the zaha hadid-designed ‘napoli afragola’ railway station. intended as a gateway to southern italy, the interchange is the first phase of a larger development that will complete in 2022. located 12 kilometers north of naples, construction began in 2015 with the building inaugurated in 2017.

zaha hadid architects conceived the project as an ‘urbanized public bridge’ that connects the communities on either side of the railway. the station’s configuration is defined by its circulation routes, which minimize walking distances. large entrances at both ends of the station guide visitors to elevated public zones lined with shops and other amenities. passengers from either side meet in a central atrium overlooked by cafés and restaurants, before descending to the platforms below.

designed as an extruded trapezoid along its 450 meter curved path, the station’s elevated concourse is orientated at an angle from the railway tracks to improve its environmental performance. meanwhile, an integrated solar photovoltaic array and natural light and ventilation, as well as ground source cooling and heating systems, enable the station to minimize energy consumption.

when all rail lines become operational by 2022, 32,700 passengers are expected to use the station every day (approximately 12 million passengers each year), with up to 4,800 local commuters using the station each morning and evening rush-hour. the project intends to relieve congestion in naples city center, but does not replace the existing terminus at napoli centrale.
