bundook designs 'nocturnal beasts', street furniture shaped like magical creatures

to enhance teenagers’ experience of hanging out on the streets — no matter the season or time of day — israeli design studio bundook has created a series of street furniture for younger generations. shaped as magical creatures, ‘nocturnal beasts’ draws inspiration from ‘alice in wonderland’ and ‘where the wild things are’. the collection can produce heat and light, as well as function as loudspeakers, without using electricity.

‘in conclusion to numerous talks with different groups of teenagers and a series of photographs taken during night time, documenting the youth’s social behavior, the project aims to provide a solution for three basics needs: heat, light, and sound,’ explains yohay alush, the founder of bundook.

the series, the design of which was advised by alush’s professor shmulik kaplan, comprises three pieces: ‘bentz’, a bench with a stove, where users put collected lumber in and light the fire to warm up; ‘moe’, a lounge chair with pedals, featuring dinamo machine, so that people are able to generate street lighting based on dynamo, gear, and an electric charger; and a concrete seat called ‘paca’, which can work as a loudspeaker for a phone, thanks to its big metal pipe.
