milton glaser perfectly mocks donald trump, among designers to create logo for president's ‘space force’

renowned graphic designer milton glaser has designed a logo for donald trump‘s ‘space force’. the american president outlined plans for the new addition of a branch that would focus on space warfare within the US military in june.

following on from trump’s meeting of the national space council, where he directed the pentagon and department of defense to realise his ambitions, eight prominent graphic designers have branded the proposed agency. all art work has been commissioned by bloomberg businessweek.

glaser mocks donald trump in his design of a branded patch meant to represent trump’s ‘space force’. two bright red arrows are placed either side the organisation’s name ‘SPACE’ which sits at the centre of a silhouette of the US president’s head. paired with a a constellation of planets the design suggests there is little going on inside his skull.

erin knutson‘s design combines typefaces associated with various liberal media outlets. bloomberg says of the design: ‘above, space force is a futuristic proposition born of nostalgia, embodied in a type mashup of NASA’s worm, sci-fi gaming, and metal bands whose events might inspire trump’s own rallies.’

david reinfurt‘s logo design is inspired by the effects of a black hole. suggesting negative connotations when it comes to the newly proposed organization, the united states space force typeface is warped as it swirls into the blank space at the centre of the patch.

new york-based graphic design studio other means had created a logo that evokes spaceballs. parodying the original star wars trilogy, the mel brooks movie features a bumbling dictator steering a ship selling spaceballs merch.

‘I developed an obvious image of earth surrounded by the words ‘SPACE FORCE,’ suggesting satellites’, lance wyman says of his design. ‘besides the obvious use of space for military purposes, I would hope it will be a collaborative force to monitor and help avoid polluting space.‘

brooklyn-based graphic design studio mgmt. design has gone for a comical approach when it comes to their logo design. depicting an alien surrounded by the united states space force name, it serves as a reference to the current issues regarding U.S. immigration policy. other designs include sagi haviv’s of chermayeff & geismar & haviv, inspired by the former logo for the U.S. air force, which was abandoned in 2000, and a logo created by ELLA, a design partnership based in LA, which incorporates the space protection agency.
