Matsuoka's Tsubaki

Matsuoka's Tsubaki by Lior Friedman from

designer's own words:

This work consists of a row of 5 camellia blossoms constructed out of paper. Each of the blossoms is made out of a sheet of paper on which 1 out of 5 of Matsuoka Shiki's poems, about either camellia flowers or the city of Matsuyama, is written with a black brush pen. Choosing to utilize the black and white of pen and paper instead of the vivid color of the natural camellia blossom, the paper constructs form a connection between the zen aesthetics of Japan in the past and the minimalist aesthetic of the present.
Though from afar all the blossoms appear identical, looking up close one can notice that there are subtle variations in size, number of petals, and, of course, the words of the poem that peel out from the petals
