seven unsigned murals which debuted across paris this week have been confirmed to be the work of elusive british street artist banksy. the works are believed to take aim at the city’s migration crisis. on wednesday, world refugee day, passers by in the north of the city noticed a stencil of a young black girl  which appeared overnight near a former centre for refugees.

experts believe the series of murals are a criticism of negative feelings regarding migration in france. banksy officially posted a photo of one of them, a graffitied rat holding a box cutter on the centre pompidou via instagram, with the caption, ‘fifty years since the uprising in paris 1968. the birthplace of modern stencil art.‘

one mural is an adaptation of jacques-louis david’s painting of napoleon crossing the alps on horseback. the image shows the red cloak wrapped around the general’s face, an apparent reference to france’s 2010 ban on face coverings in public places. another piece depicts a pair or rats whose view is directed at the iconic eiffel tower.
