this 250-square-foot micro home is inspired by the apollo 11 lunar lander

reaching 9 feet above ground, this tiny abode looks as though it came from out of space and landed on the banks of the columbia river, of which it is settled. hence it comes as no surprise that architect kurt hughes modelled the hexagon-shaped micro home after a lunar lander – an iconic spacecraft used during the historic apollo 11 landing.

elevated by three steel beams a staircase offers an entry point into the 250-square-foot home which comprises an open floor plan lit by a large geodesic dome skylight. a kitchen with stainless steel appliances occupies a small space near to a dining area which is situated by a window overlooking the river and the hillside. meanwhile a retro-styled mirror and semi-spherical basin styles a wash area just off the bathroom.

hughes applies his thirty years experience as a boat designer to resolve challenges of creating such a compact space. a small ladder leads below deck where a bed sleeping two people is neatly poisitioned. upstairs, a small outdoor deck offers a space to look upon the surrounding wildlife.
