nine posters describe the syntax of bjarke ingels' BIGgest projects

the widespread use of digital tools has changed the architecture profession. amidst this transition, charles morris argues that three fields of study, though different, remain relevant: semantics, pragmatics, and syntax. designer giuseppe gallo — inspired by the work of bjarke ingels — created these nine, colorful posters in response to BIG’s incredible use of syntax.

as architecture has evolved from practical structures to ski slopes on powerplants, the language and the importance of each field of study has evolved too. in this theory, semantics is the relation between the system of signs and their meanings; pragmatics represent the relations of signs to interpreters (the signs and the behaviors they engender); finally, syntax is the study of the formal relations between signs.

giuseppe gallo’s dissection of BIG’s use of syntax resulted in these nine posters. according to gallo, ‘syntax is one of the formal aspects that, in our opinion, characterizes many of bjarke ingels group (BIG)’s works compared to the work of previous generations of architects. their projects generate a syntactic evolution transpired by the will to find new solutions for environmental, social, economic and technological problems.’ currently giuseppe gallo is creative director of mirabilia and is a PhD candidate of architecture at the university of palermo.
