azzurra ceramic basin re-imagined as a sculpture by daniel libeskind

on the occasion of milan design week 2018, azzurra inaugurates their new showroom with the debut of an unexpected and expressively sculptural collection, called ‘hera’, with daniel libeskind. the italian brand, who specialize in ceramic basins and sanitary-ware, strives for a philosophy where the bathroom is transformed from a space of utility to one with a irresistible identity and one that represents a smooth continuation of the interior. the new design illustrates this search for harmony both in relation to itself as an object and to the surrounding spaces of the room, house, shop or restaurant in which it is placed.

‘design has become so important to people’s lives on a global scale. you can find good design in very small inexpensive things to, of course, the super luxury. mies van der rohe famously once said ‘god is in the details’ and I believe this is really true,‘ said daniel libeskind. ‘I am always mindful when designing products, just as I am as an architect, to create something truly unique and functional, and I am lucky to be able to collaboration with the best manufacturers in the business.‘

in its quest for harmony, the azzura ‘hera’ collection by daniel libeskind lives off its intrinsic integrity as, although seemingly never static, its form depicts perfectly balanced movement. unexpected geometry appears to fold and curve with expressive clarity, creating a sequence of angles and lines that emphasizes an interplay of light and shadows, as well as its composition. as a study of idea beauty, the object-sculpture is a reference to life and a desire to satisfy the aesthetic senses.

‘the design is inspired by the neoclassical marble sculptures—to reflect fluid and simple beauty,‘ added libeskind. ‘the form brings together the sense of movement and transparency while addressing practical design solutions for everyday objects.‘ with its liking to that of mid-century architecture, the architect has truly re-imagined the ceramic basin as a sculptural piece. its shapes speak of noble simplicity while a silent grandeur encapsulates the indissoluble image.
