ara thorose explores form, material, and balance with on pointe collection

detroit-based designer ara thorose reveals his collection of design objects ‘on pointe’ completed in 2018. the pieces are the latest in the continual development of a form language and a material language, converging explorations of materiality, form, movement, and balance. each sculpture’s form follows a course of curving movements composing fluxes of loops and arches.

the objects’ postures are precariously balanced, maneuvered to keep upright while maintaining poise. thorose crafted each object by hand through an innovative process that repurposes transparent industrial rubber tubing. encapsulated within the tubing of each sculpture, is a selected variety of materials ranging broadly in origin and character. the confluence of materials creates a complex sense of materiality.

the encapsulated materials are arranged in a play of color and texture to compliment and contrast. harmony and dissonance of color and texture are juxtaposed with the synchronistic movement of lines and their unification in form. a current of intricacy flows through the work without interrupting its fluid surfaces and movements. on pointe will be exhibited at venice design alongside the venice biennale from may 26th through november 25th 2018.
