LAYER + kvadrat design an upcycled textile-made structure for milan design week

benjamin hubert from LAYER has collaborated alongside danish company kvadrat to present at the 2018 edition of the milan design week its support frame called ‘SHIFT’. given the name in reference to its ability to easily transform from a flat acoustic wall panel to a shelf used for display and storage. the flexible system has been designed to maximize space and display areas in response to the constantly changing needs of retail environments.

english based industrial design agency LAYER‘s ‘SHIFT’ can seamlessly adapt to different scenarios. it can be used in high-demand sales periods, during which storage and display areas need to be prioritized, to launches and openings, when floor space and acoustics need to be maximized for entertaining.

SHIFT is available in four colors — blue (recycled denim), white (recycled hospital bed sheets), yellow, and grey

SHIFT uses no screws or bolts in its construction

the kerfs cut into the shelf create a mechanism allowing it to unfurl, like a soft, flowing textile

this refined solution for the mechanism is the result of ten prototypes over six months
