ahead of the 2018 venice architecture biennale, global agency PLANE—SITE is asking prominent architects to reflect on time, space, and existence — three topics that also provide the name for one of the biennial festival’s collateral events. after hearing the thoughts of tatiana bilbao, three more acclaimed architects — richard meier, kengo kuma, and fumihiko maki — have now been interviewed.

produced by PLANE—SITE, the videos have been funded by the european cultural centre in the build-up to the 2018 venice architecture biennale. the series of films has been commissioned by the GAA foundation, the organization curating the TIME SPACE EXISTENCE exhibit. the first movie spotlights richard meier who has become known for his bold and modernist designs cast in white. in this short video, the pritzker prize-winning architect discusses these and his first ever black building, as well as his love of designing buildings for public gathering, for enjoyment and for learning.

next, PLANE—SITE traveled to the tokyo offices of kengo kuma & associates to discuss the topics of time, space, and existence as they relate to architecture with the eponymous architect. kuma speaks on the humility architects require and his firm’s design philosophy of creating human, natural spaces by blending architecture and nature.

the final video, features AIA gold medalist and pritzker laureate fumihiko maki. with a career spanning six decades, maki’s architecture is renowned for its understated integrations of metal, glass and concrete. in this short movie, the japanese modernist discusses how human behavior and his mentor, kenzo tange, have shaped his life and work.
